Premiering February 12, Survivor will be on its 18th season / cast-off to an island. I am extremely impressed that is has lasted this long. It is a soap opera for viewers to watch that don’t want to admit they watch actual soap operas. I must admit, I am one of those people. Every season I am fascinated by the exact same situations people end up in from the previous seasons.
For 39 days, a group of people willingly starve themselves, and are put through some of the most physically intense challenges of their lives after only eating a handful of rice, for a chance to win a million dollars, which is later heavily taxed. Forced to live outdoors in a bamboo hut, fighting off cold weather during the night, by desperately clinging to any type of body heat one can get.
The producers of Survivor create new and exciting scenarios for each season. I.e. Three ending finalists, multiple immunity idols, and the challenges do seem to be physically harder than before.
There is also the twists the contestants’ have begun doing the last few seasons, such as creating their own hidden immunity Idols, that actually do look like the real thing, or as far as we can tell as viewers.
There is always the “Bay Watch” appeal of the attractive women and physically fit men running around in bathing suits. Bringing on the Model Boxer one season, must have definitely gained the season some ratings from the male viewers.
Each day bringing new and exciting situations, the host of Survivor taunts these contestant through their challenges just to make them fight a little harder, and we applaud with a thunderous roar.
Survivor has endless surprises, constant manipulation, driven sex appeal, brutal action, and it’s all brilliantly edited. Mark Burnett, you’re my hero!
