  • Runtime Error and Server Upgrade

We now know what’s causing the runtime error in version 1.0 of Graboid - it’s a bug in a component of the software that comes from a Firefox activex module. Since we can’t fix it directly (it’s not our code), we’re having to rewrite a fair bit of the Graboid code that displays information in the main application window. The patch fix will go live as soon as we complete a major server upgrade that is ongoing as we speak, and should be complete within 24 hours (morning of Friday the 25th).

The server upgrade will increase the speed of almost all data load times within Graboid (not video download, which is already faster than most machines can handle), as well as making our service more robust.

Sorry for the runtime error, we’ve solved it as quickly as possible. If you’re having difficulty using 1.0 because of this error, please install version 0.95 until we get it fixed. Thanks.

please direct support-oriented posts to the Graboid User Forums. This blog is for general commentary and rants that aren’t rude.

  • Everything but the Octopus

I just saw the screenshots for the new website that we’ll be putting up later this week. To quote Borat, “Vury Naase”. Everything’s changed but the Octopus. You’ll get a kick out of the homepage for a very specific reason, and I’m looking forward to getting peoples’ reactions. No hints, just wait for it.

People have been yammering at me for a year now to watch “Battlestar Galactica” and I finally got around to it this weekend. Actually a pretty darn good show. I’m surprised because normally I have no patience for TV other than live sports, comedies, or the occasional drama that I watch with my wife. She’s off visiting family right now and my beloved Maple Leafs are becoming laughably bad, so after the NFL playoffs are done, what to do, what to do… I’ve become disenchanted with World of Warcraft as I’m stuck in some nether-region called Desolace, and only infrequently run into anyone else, let alone from my own faction. Sorry, I’m digressing.

Battlestar - I loved the original series and moaned its demise, but this new one is a great substitute. I can’t quite get over Starbuck being a girl, but other than that thoroughly enjoyable. My other favourite shows are Entourage, Dexter, Dirty Sexy Money, Rules of Engagement, Brothers and Sisters, and when I’m really pressed, Two and a Half Men. If that sounds like a mix that appeals to you, then definitely check out Battlestar Galactica. I’m sure you can buy the DVDs cheap on eBay since they’ve been around a while.

  • Graboid is growing, and growing fast.

We apologize to our loyal users for the downtime we’ve all been experiencing. The good news is that Wednesday, November 28, we will be undertaking MAJOR server upgrades. Please be patient as the site and service (and even e-mail support) will likely be interrupted throughout the morning. We are trying to complete all of the upgrades during our least busy time, 4AM to 10AM EST, and we will switch the site over to a static progress page to keep all of you informed of the status of the upgrades. You will be able to access this status page by visiting www.graboid.com.

We thank you for your patience and understanding, and look forward to offering you improved reliability.

  • Your critique of graboid.com

After the fantastic level of response to the our last blog post, I thought we could use some feedback regarding our site. By “site” I mean our web site, and not our application which you use to download your masses of video content.

Your participation in our little poll would be extremely helpful, but even better would be posting your thoughts in our comments section — so don’t be shy!
